Blake's 7
52 episodes (1978-1981) 60m
Trek meets Robin Hood in this at times darkly pessimistic show. Despite this and the cheap sets, the series became a British cult classic. With the aid of an alien spaceship and an ill-tempered computer, Blake (who leaves the show after the second season) leads his crew of rejects in the struggle against galactic totalitarianism. Fans of classic low-budget British sci-fi will love it.

Lexx
61 episodes (1970-1971) 90/60m
Barbarella-style action sees misfit band swipe a sentient ship that turns out to be the ultimate weapon of mass destruction in both universes. They enter the Dark Zone and cause non-stop havoc while trying to deal with their sexual desires. The show revels in its Dwarf-ish tackiness - but the digital FX are often fantastic nonetheless. Fabulous cutting-edge fun.

Farscape
88 episodes (1999-2003) 60m
Pilot of an experimental ship accidentally enters a wormhole and ends up light-years away where he is rescued by sentient-ship Moya. To find a way home he teams up with prison escapees fleeing from the 'Peacekeepers'. Produced in Australia - the sets, costumes and FX are superb, and co-star Claudia Black is a deadset sci-fi babe. A classic space-based sci-fi series.

Firefly
15 episodes (2002) 60m
Sci-fi western that never really took off, despite a pretty healthy budget and the input of Buffy creator Joss Whedon. Four centuries from now a violent civil war results in the formation of the Union of Planets. Our heroes don't care for the new deal and zoom around in the Firefly-class ship Serenity expressing their displeasure. Has a legion of dedicated cult groupies.

Battlestar Galactica (2003)
45 episodes (2004-2007) 60m
The remake to top all remakes - this time around Starbuck is a woman and the FX are eerily realistic. Toss in a soundtrack that evokes the sparseness of space, highly original sets, genuine human drama and some purely paranoid plot twists... and it's easy to see why this show has so many fans. Began life as a two-part miniseries and only got better. Casual viewers may get a bit lost.

Stargate Universe
40 episodes (2009-2011) 60m
This series features a strong ensemble cast and some moody dramatic tension, but is a little short on the tongue-in-cheek verve that has been a trademark of the Stargate franchise. A multinational exploration team gets stuck in the far-reaches of the universe after being forced to evacuate to the Ancient starship 'Destiny'. A mixed critical reception picked up on the show's "edgier" feel.

Dark Matter
39 episodes (2015-2017) 60m
The six-person crew of a derelict spaceship awakens from stasis in the farthest reaches of space. Their memories wiped clean, they have no recollection of who they are or how they got on board. The only clue to their identities is a cargo bay full of weaponry and a destination... a remote mining colony that is about to become a war zone. Interesting premise for an uravelling mystery.

The Orville
36 episodes (2017-2022) 60m
The episodic adventures of the not-so-functional crew of an exploratory ship in the Planetary Union, 400 years in the future. Creator and star Seth MacFarlane pays homage to Star Trek by pretty well copying the orignal series' main premise and throwing in a healthy dose of humour. Then he confoundingly decided that every second episode would feature a more serious tone.
