22 episodes (1995) 60m

Despite winning equal rights, after the AI wars the genetically engineered 'InVitroes' constantly face prejudice and discrimination. Superb series with remarkably high production values.

Lexx
61 episodes (1997-2002) 90m & 60m

Barbarella-style action sees misfit band swipe a sentient ship that turns out to be the ultimate weapon of mass destruction in both universes. They enter the Dark Zone and cause non-stop havoc while trying to deal with their sexual desires. The show revels in its Dwarf-ish tackiness - but the digital FX are often fantastic nonetheless. Fabulous cutting-edge fun.

Farscape
80 episodes (1999-2003) 60m

Pilot of an experimental ship accidentally enters a wormhole and ends up light-years away where he is rescued by sentient-ship Moya. To find a way home he teams up with prison escapees fleeing from the 'Peacekeepers'. Produced in Australia - the sets, costumes and FX are superb, and co-star Claudia Black is a deadset sci-fi babe. A classic space-based sci-fi series.

Crusade
13 episodes (1999) 60m

Short-lived Babylon 5 spin-off regarded by many critics as the superior item. Following the end of the Shadow War, a deadly bio-tech virus is perpetrated on Earth by vengeful aliens. With only five years to find a cure (or we all die), experimental ship Excalibur and crew sets off on the quest. Basically the Knights of the Round Table in space.

Andromeda
110 episodes (2000-05) 60m

A topnotch Gene Roddenberry brainchild - 'High Guard' ship and captain get caught in time dilation. Three centuries later a salvage-freighter finds both, but the gloriously idealistic Commonwealth has decayed and 'Slipstream' inter-planetary travel is almost forgotten. Freighter crew joins captain to establish a New Commonwealth. Out-Treks Trek in many ways.

Firefly
15 episodes (2002) 60m

Sci-fi western that never really took off, despite a pretty healthy budget and the input of Buffy creator Joss Whedon. Four centuries from now a violent civil war results in the formation of the Union of Planets. Our heroes don't care for the new deal and zoom around in the Firefly-class ship Serenity expressing their displeasure. Has a legion of dedicated cult groupies.

Battlestar Galactica
84 episodes (2003-10) 60m

The remake to top all remakes - this time around Starbuck is a woman and the FX are eerily realistic. Toss in a soundtrack that evokes the sparseness of space, highly original sets, genuine human drama and some purely paranoid plot twists... and it's easy to see why this show has so many fans. Began life as a two-part miniseries and only got better. Casual viewers may get a bit lost.

Stargate - Atlantis
100 episodes (2004-2009) 60m

A spin-off from the popular Stargate SG1 series in which a search for the Lost City of the Ancients has uncovered Atlantis and its Stargate to another galaxy. There's new technologies, new allies and a dreaded new enemy - but the catch is the SG team that visits may not be able to get back home. Tough to top the original, but this usually managed to be great fun.
